Cheques returned for insufficient funds
A. The revised charges cheque returns due to insufficient funds will now be Nu.1,000, replacing the previous charge of Nu.300 plus 10% of the cheque value. However, the process and fees for other cheque return codes, applicable to both intrabank and interbank transactions, will remained unchanged.

B. If a cheque is returned due to insufficient funds in the drawer’s account, a service fee of Nu.1,000 will be charged per returned cheque. This rule applies to individuals issuing multiple cheques, with the service fee being imposed for each retuned cheque, up to three occurrences. After third instance, the Bank will notify the drawer to surrender the remaining cheque booklet. The drawer’s account should be ineligible for cheque facility for three years.

C. The process and timeline for handling cheques returned due to insufficient funds shall follow the provisions outlined in the Negotiable Instrument Act 2000 and the Negotiable Instrument (Amendment) Act of Bhutan 2021.
